My First Attempt On Macro Shot Photos

I have always liked photography, in a way. The thought of holding a bulky camera and gears that weighs a tonne is “orgasmic” a wonderful feeling. I remember the process of choosing my first digital camera a few years ago. I had two camera choices — Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX7 and Panasonic DMC-FZ3. There was another model Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 (if I’m not mistaken) which felt a lot more “natural” in my hand but the price tag was a drawback. It is almost RM1,000 more expensive than the other two.

My dad recommended me the FX7 because it’s smaller and easier to carry around. However, the thought of a 12 times optical zoom and “big” (sort of more professional looking) camera, was just too hard to resist. I ended up purchasing the FZ3.

I have to admit there were times when I regretted and thought that I should have gone for the smaller, slimmer FX7 instead. For instance, during my convocation where most of my friends carried their cameras in their trousers or shirt pockets while I couldn’t bring mine along. Carrying my FZ3 under my “robe” might look like I had an AK-47 hidden beneath it. However, I still love my FZ3. It is my “first love”, isn’t it?

Below are 2 photos I took in my “mini-garden” yesterday evening. It was in the evening, and it just started to rain. Therefore the lighting isn’t enough. My camera must be 3 years old or so. The air was cloudy. Blah-blah-blah. OKOK, those are just excuses for my amateur looking “macro shots”.

Big red flower

I resized the photos without any editing. The flower above is quite nice. Look at the background on the right and you will see how it grows from a tiny “dot” to a big flower on the left.

Tiny white flower

This one looks like “seeds”. When the flower “blooms”, it is tiny and white.

So, how can I improve? Is there still hope in me? This is the first time I am posting my photos. So be gentle when you comment. Or else… Hahhaha.

Scam: You Have Been Warned!

Scam, scam, scam. Will it ever end? I went over to Jee’s blog and read his latest post Scam warning. He said he “almost got cheated by a scam” and asked to “help spread the warning“. After reading his explanation on “what happened”, I realized if I were in his situation, I could have been cheated as well.

Unlike the other examples that I have given in the past that uses “greed” to cheat the victims, this scam reported by Jee uses “fear”. It triggers your fears in hope that you will lose rationality of the situation. Thankfully, he was able to sense something amiss and consulted his sister before taking further actions.

Earlier today, I read a notice posted on Hotlink’s website regarding a scam that was spreading through sms that started only last month. I couldn’t locate that page anymore. I’ll link it here if I can ever find it again.

There are 101 scams out there — online and offline. Consider yourself warned.

Sex: Ridiculous SMS Marketing Strategy

Sex is one of the “most powerful tools of marketing and particularly advertising” (source). It must have been used to sell many things in the past — clothes, magazines, cars, beers etc. If that is not enough, some digg users are even using sex to attract diggs for their submitted posts! What is the world becoming to?

For the past 1 month, I received 3 sms sent through sms push campaigns that used sex to attract consumers to their products. So, what are they selling? Animated wallpapers for mobile phones!

First sms:

FOC:Yes Honeyy..?SO nicee..do U Want CUMming tonight?Lets have fun together..U sure like it!SMS <ON 69> to 32xxx for animation girl;<ON GIRLS> wa/paper.eCe

Second sms:

FOC:Abg tgh buat apa kat situ?Jgn pura2,I tau abg fikir apa.Baiklah,Cepat htr sms<ON HOTC>ke 32xxx, biar Ina tunaikan impian abg sepjang hari.JaminCUN!
RM1/smseC

Third sms:

FOC:Jiwaku gersang?sudikah “AWAK” jadi pghibur 12 tgahmlm?jika ya,SMS<on 36> ke 33xxx utk gmbr gadis ANIMASI; <on cun>gadis W/PAPER

eCrm1/sms

Each sms sent will probably cost RM1. The first sms does not include this information in the sms itself (not sure if this is legal). Next, look at how the third sms smartly conceals this information at very bottom of the sms, after many many “new lines”. To say the least, it is very irritating to receive stupid sms like these. To me, their “tactics” of using sex to sell their wallpapers is unethical.

Let’s take things to the extreme; Can any one of the 3 sms be classified as “sexual harassment”? Imagine getting an sms from your colleague asking if you want coffee or tea for lunch that sounded like this:

Yes Honeyy..?SO nicee..do U Want CUMming tonight?Lets have fun together..U sure like it!SMS <ON 69> for coffee; <ON BED> for tea to 012-3456789.

I personally think that the mobile service providers should take initiatives to check messages sent through sms push campaigns like these. I don’t think any parents will be too fond to have their teenagers receiving messages like that.

Initially, my post’s title is “Ridiculous SMS Marketing Strategy“. I added the “Sex: ” in front to hopefully attract a little more attention to this post. Hey, sex does sell, doesn’t it? So, did it work?

More Money For Nuffnang Members!

Check out Nuffnang’s latest post Nuffnang Increases Blogger Earnings! and you’ll notice they mentioned that “blogger earnings will grow as the size of the community grows”. They have revised the blogger band thus resulting in an average of 50% or more increase in the earnings of their members starting this week!

First round of cheques have been sent out to their members. So far, I’ve only read one post about it though. There should be more to come.

Tickets for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Opening Night has been distributed to the 250 lucky Nuffnang members. This will be a great chance to meet up with great bloggers like Jeff Ooi, Paul Tan, Suanie, Shaolintiger, Kimberlycun, Cheeserland, Chanlilian, Rojaks and Kid Chan.

As for the rumored sweet voice of Samantha from Nuffnang … all I can say is, it’s true. She has a sweet voice ;-)

UPDATE: If you haven’t signed up with Nuffnang, you can register an account here. Nuffnang is open to both Malaysians and Singaporeans. For Singaporean bloggers, checkout Nuffnang.com.sg. If you want some “serious” review on Nuffnang and their competitor (Advertlets), I have done some reviews on them. Not to mention some *hot stuff* that came after. Check them out under the “Categories” menu.

Advertlets Riddle: Main Dish (Final)

I received a comment from reaymond in one of my previous posts. If you have read the comments left by “some aliens” (exist today, but vanish tomorrow) in my blog, you will understand what I mean when I say, reaymond sounded like “someone”. So the normal routine of checking the IP address was done. And though it was close, it was safe to say that reaymond is “clean”. That is why I approved it.

Later in the day when I had more time, I did some further investigations and found that reaymond could have been “someone” from within Advertlets. Here are my findings:

**********

1. IP address

All the IP addresses of DevilsAdvocate, amateur, reaymond and Josh Lim are somehow “linked”. I made a mistake earlier by approving reaymond’s comment because the range of his IP address works differently from the other IP addresses that I have seen so far. Based on my observation on the other commenter’s IP addresses in this same range, it is safe to say that all the IP addresses recorded by DevilsAdvocate, amateur, reaymond and Josh Lim are somehow “linked” and could have came from the same computer/network. In fact, in one occasion, reaymond had the same IP address as Josh Lim.

**********

2. Feed/RSS reader

Amateur, reaymond and Josh Lim uses the same feed/rss reader. Even the version of the program is the same. Please take note that the feed/rss reader that they are using is not the latest version and that there are dozens of other feed/rss readers in the market. DevilsAdvocate is not included in this list because I was not able to collect this information on him at that time.

**********

3. Subscribed feeds (this is the bomb)

Amateur, reaymond and Josh Lim subscribed not only to my post and comments feed, but coincidentally, all 3 of them also subscribed to the same 2 posts’ feeds in my blog.

To those who are a bit lost on this point, let me explain. A feed/rss reader is like a web browser (eg. Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc). It is an alternative way to “browse” my blog. Subscribing to a feed is like bookmarking a page in your web browser. What is happening now is that all 3 of them (amateur, reaymond and Josh Lim) bookmarked the same 2 posts in my blog.

**********

I have around 50 posts and what are the odds/probability of all 3 of them bookmarking the same 2 posts, and using the same type of feed/rss reader? (Note: There are dozens of different feed/rss readers. Based on my statistics, I limit the amount of “feed/rss reader” to 10)

Question:
What are the odds/probability that the scenario below happens?

1. There are 3 people (amateur, reaymond and Josh Lim).
2. There are 10 types of feed/rss reader to choose from.
3. There are 50 posts that can be bookmarked.
4. All 3 of them needs to bookmark 2 different posts.
5. All 3 of them used the same feed/rss reader and bookmarked the same 2 posts as the others.

Answer:
The probability for the above scenario to happen is 1 in 149,253,731 cases.

**********

To better visualize the figure above, I “consulted” a probability expert in the field of gambling — TOTO. Their “Super TOTO 6/49″ is to pick 6 numbers out of 1 to 49. The prize money if someone hits the jackpot is RM5,441,000.

Therefore, based on the probability of the given scenario above to happen, it’s a whooping RM58,073,529 jackpot.

Note: Some “variables” are not included, not discussed or just ignored in this question to reduce the complexity of the formula. Example: In reality, no one is forced to bookmark any posts.

**********

For those of you who are still confused of what is happening, here is a summary of it all. There have been rumours that Josh Lim has been disguising himself using anonymous names in a few blogs while backstabbing Nuffnang. They say if there is smoke, there must be fire some where. I cannot confirm the happenings of such an event in other blogs, but I can say it seems to have happened in my blog, not once but twice.

Once again, I leave it to you, my readers to make up your own minds. I’m just discussing some mathematic probabilities here — nothing more nothing less.
