TMnet Datacenter Packet Loss Outbreak Again

Some of you may have noticed that my blogs (TenthOfMarch.com and ChanKelwin.com) were not accessible for some time occasionally in the past two days. I received an email from my hosting company regarding this problem.

27/07/2007 06:12 PM
Dear valued customers,

From 1:30pm today (27/07/2007), the entire netmyne at KL and Cyberjaya2 is having packet loss again due to their router hardware problem. It has been fixed at 6:00pm and it is running smoothly again.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Regards,
ServerFreak Network.

It was netmyne’s datacenter having problems. There was nothing my hosting company could have done. I had problems connecting to a work related website when it happened as well. I hope TMnet has solved the problems. I have a blogathon waiting for me. ;-)

Blog Second Major Outage

The server where my blog is hosted suffered its second major outage yesterday. The first one happened 2 months ago when the harddisk busted after one month of operation. The cause of this outage is not identified yet. It could be due to the harddisk or the server itself.

My hosting company didn’t want to gamble on the same server anymore. A new server was bought to replace the old (3 months old) server. Below is the specification of the new server:

Intel Quad Core Xeon 5310
2G FB ECC RAM
320G HDD Western Digital (Say no to Seagate)

Do you notice the “Say no to Seagate” notice? I guess the previous harddisk was from Seagate.

Anyway, they have done a good job backing up the harddisk before replacing the old server. I didn’t lose any posts or comments. However, some comments that I replied were not restored. I guess I’ll just have to reply to the comments again. *deja vu*

.com.my To Cost Maximum RM80 For 3 Months

MYNIC has just announced that there will be a 3 months price promotion for 7 .my top level domain names starting from 5th June 2007 to 5th September 2007. Domain names for .com.my, .net.my, org.my, .gov.my, .edu.my and mil.my will cost a maximum of RM80 while .name.my will cost a maximum of RM32. This price promotion includes new domain registration and domain renewal as well.

According to MYNIC, the actual price that each MYNIC reseller charges may vary. However, the maximum they can charge a customer remains RM80 and RM32 as mentioned above. Do check out the MYNIC resellers list to find out who is giving out the best bargain.

If you have always wanted to get yourself a .my domain name, NOW is the time. Well, maybe not exactly NOW but between 5th June 2007 to 5th September 2007. For those who have already owned one (or more), I would recommend you to renew your domain name(s) within that promotion period as well.

TenthOfMarch Down For 17 Hours!

(… and I hear a voice from a distance asking, “Why not forever?”)

I have heard some people saying that some things/people cannot be praised or else it/they will end up screwing up things. I guess me praising my web hosting company (ServerFreak) just a day ago ended up with you guys staring at the screen below for the past 17 hours.

Page Not Found

(In an attempt to recreate the screenshot above, I opened a URL that doesn’t (shouldn’t) exist — dafasdfasdfasdf.com. What are the odds for a domain like that to be registered, right? Now, try it dafasdfasdfasdf.com)

So, does that means I am ready to give ServerFreak the biggest slap on the face? Never! In fact, I don’t blame them at all. But, someone has to be blamed, right? So, who? Netmyne! Why? The server is hosted there loh! Duh!

**********

Update: Hmmm…seems like ServerFreak bought the server. Netmyne’s job is just to host it only. But still, I don’t blame ServerFreak. *frantically looking for an excuse to blame Netmyne* Ahhh….I know. Must be the fengshui at Netmyne not good, that’s why the harddisk broke!

**********

The server has been running for maybe a month or so only and the harddisk is already broken. After a few minutes of damage assessment, I realized I lost my previous post and some comments. I also lost 2 votes in my first poll. ARGGHHH!!! But luckily I have a copy of the previous post in my local drive and I remember what the two votes were. As for the comments, I can retrieve them from my mailbox. At the end of the day, the damages were minimal. *phewww*

They replaced the faulty harddisk with a new one. I will try to remind myself to make a backup once every two days or so, for the next 30 days. That is because if a new harddisk has any manufacturing defects, it should show by then (I think). Anyway, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

On an unrelated topic, support my attempt to increase awareness on scams! Read this post and vote. There is 5 more days to prepare a post for it. On 30th April 2007, those who are willing to join this campaign will need to publish a post regarding scams in their own blog(s). If this campaign is successful, we can even do it a “monthly thing” — one post at the end of every month. I even made an ugly banner/button for it. Can someone please help design a better one?

Scam Awareness Campaign

UPDATE: If you commented in my post but don’t see it there anymore, don’t worry. I’ll add those comments back soon.

UPDATE 2: All comments were added back up. *BIG LONG SIGGHHH* What I need to do next, is to RE-ANSWER all the comments again. DEJAVU. LOL!

UPDATE 3: All done. Everything is back to normal. *exhausted*
