Celcom Broadband was launched early this month. It promises true mobility and lightning speed internet access to its users whether they are surfing from home or outdoors.
Plan and rates:
There are 3 plans available. You can choose to subscribe at RM8 for 24 hours unlimited, RM68 for a monthly unlimited access, or pay-per-use at 10 cents per 10kb. The chart below shows a comparison of Celcom’s rate compared to its rival.
How to subscribe?
Existing Celcom subscribers:
- Daily Unlimited - Register via SMS or dial *118#
- Monthly Unlimited - Register at any Celcom Service Centre or selected dealer
Non-Celcom subscribers:
- Register at the nearest Celcom Service Centre.
What you need?
Laptop or notebook users require a:
- USB modem
- Datacard, or
- A GPRS and/or 3G enabled mobile phone
What is the catch?
#1: The advertised 384kbps speed can only be “obtained” if your phone supports 3G and you are in an area that is covered by the Celcom broadband service.
#2: If your phone does not support 3G or you are not in the service area, you are running on their GPRS service which provides a bandwidth of 60-70kbps only. That is just slightly faster than a dialup connection.
Note: Bandwidth figures and other information were obtained from Celcom’s call center.
UPDATED:
1) You will need to have a 3G sim card in order to get the 384kbps bandwidth. Or else, it will only be 112kbps max.
2) The 3GX that offers you up to 3.6mbps is open for invitations only. You will receive an SMS if you are the lucky one. Even then, you will need to be within the coverage area.
3) The USB modem (Huawei E220) is sold at RM900+ to RM1,200+. You will need to look around to get a good deal on this. My friend bought it for RM1,100 last week.

I went to the service center to ask the other day. I think I threw away the paper that I wrote on. You can either call their service center or drop by their office one day. However, as far as I can remember, the USB modem isn’t cheap. If I am not mistaken, it is around RM300-600+ (IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN)

I haven’t used Celcom Broadband before so I couldn’t answer that question. Try calling up their customer service. I am sure their support team will help you out on that.
I think we need to juz wait n see how celcom broadband’s progress. As far as i’m concern, this thing is new n not yet proven. Let others do the trial n error, n should there be errors, let celcom fix it first. Then when it is better than other options, we’ll sneak in. Currently, i’m staying with my streamyx n use the old-fashioned cybercafe while travelling. Fits me well ~

LOL. Well, someone still needs to jump on the Celcom broadband wagon to actually test and give feedback. I don’t see Streamyx being replaced by any of the mobile broadbands in my area. So far I think Streamyx is still faster even though there are many cons.

One of the methods is through Bluetooth. You will need to get a bluetooth USB dongle if you haven’t already got one. To setup the phone, you will need to call Celcom customer service. Their technician will brief you on that.
I think streamyx is the best but i’m staying in college,so i choose celcom broadband because there is no maxis broadband coverage here in kuantan ,i also used USB modem..it is quite expensive but i think it is more covenient for a student like me.

this celcom broadband aaa.. in my home, the download speed around -below 30kb. this is becoz i using phone as modem w/out 3g coverage.
i was try the hsdpa usb modem using my broadband sim card, in 3g coverage
the speed nearly 1mb.
Actualy, if I have a choice, I go to streamyx, but all of the phone cable in my kampung was stolenlah..

Kalau nak guna celcom broadband ni, ada dua cara. Ini melalui pengalaman saya sendiri mengunakan perkhidmatan ini.
1) Menggunakan 3g phone sebagai modem.
Bergantung pada coverage, sekiranya ada signal 3g di kawasan anda, kelajuan muat turun boleh mencapai melebihi 300kb, jika hanya ada gprs coverage, mungkin kelajuan muat turun hanya sekitar bawah 100kb, kalau lagi kurang signal saya hanya dapat kurang dari 20kb, dial up lagi laju.
2) Menggunakan hsdpa usb modem, masih perlukan 3g coverage untuk mendapatkan kelajuan muat turun yang tinggi, tidak seperti menggunakan phone sebagai modem, kelajuan muat turun hampir 1mb. Kalau takde 3g signal, dapatlah 200-300kb.

Yeah.. Any place with celcom service can use this service, but the speed depent to the signal strength.
And bear in mind, if you want the best result, use the modem that you can see in the celcom adv. That device cost about RM9++ at lowyat.
Another one aaa.. This service, the sales rep told to me, has no contract, so if dislike can terminate w/out penalty.

Yeah, when you are in an area without 3G coverage, the line will be a lot slower. Since you said Streamyx isn’t an option, I guess mobile broadband is your next best choice. And thanks for translating it for murni and explaining it to Hideaki.

You will get a connection as long as you are in an area covered by Celcom. However, not all areas are covered by 3G. If you are out of the 3G area, your speed is much slower. You can check the Celcom website for places that is covered by 3G.

Are you a Celcom subscriber? The best method is to subscribe to their service for one day. Using your 3G enabled mobile phone, you can try out their speed. If you like it, you can subscribe monthly or else, just stop. This is what the customer care staff told me.

May I add on, there have 2 type of data card, 3g data card nowadays cost below RM3++, and the speed similar to 3g phone, another one is high speed data card and the price nearly RM1k. Using usb modem is more convenience.
And Remember, if no 3g cvrg. the speed is slower. I leave near K Selangor.

My friend bought the Huawei E220 USB modem for around RM1,100. I think he got it from Celcom or some shop (not sure).
If you have a 3g sim card and in a 3g coverage area, your bandwidth can be up to 384kbps. If you are not using a 3g sim card, it will be 112kbps max. 3GX (hsdpa) is only open for invitation only. You will receive an SMS if you are selected. For this, your speed can shoot up to 3.6mbps. I got this info from the Celcom call centre.

Pastu modem harga mase promosi tu sekitar RM800-900, x beli sebab x de duit.
27/10/2007 baru ade duit nak beli modem usb tapi tak dapat harga promosi, deal punya deal last-last dapat dlm RM1050 HUAWEI E220 USB Modem.
USB Modem ni auto install, pastu setting cuma kat APN tu jer letak celcom3g (sejibik taip camtu) dan kat “Chose profile name” blasah ler ape name pon. Nombor untuk dail sambungan internet *99# (yg ni biasanya dah tertera).
Sedang pakai di rumah tapi tak dapat coverage 3G. Speed yg dpt skrg 56K je duduk di Kalumpang, tapi kalu pegi kat jalan utama dapat coverage 3G. X penah terai lagi sebab x da laptop nak test kat sane, pakai desktop pc jer…

It depends on the coverage in your area and the type of modem you use. Generally, people are saying that Celcom Broadband does offer a good broadband speed. If you have all the right ingredients — 3G sim card, 3G modem and in a 3G coverage area, you should experience fast connection speed.

Untuk kelajuan maksimum, anda perlu berada dalam lingkungan 3G celcom, ada sim card Celcom 3G dan telefon atau modem yang support 3G. Daftar ikut hari atau bulan ikut arahan dalam “How to subscribe?” di atas.

Kabel telekom di tpt saya juga selalu dicuri. Tahun ni sudah 2 kali kejadian tersebut berlaku dan saya tdk dpt melayari internet menggunakan streamyx selama 2 bulan. Namun, saya mendapar rebat dari Telekom & TM Net untuk 2 bulan tersebut. Pak ngah juga perlu ke Telekom untuk mendapatkan rebat akibat tdk dpt menggunkan servis mereka. Itu hak kita sebagai pengguna. i went to celcom centre in kangar on friday and was told that they need to order the usb which would take between two to three days to deliver.
an option was for me to buy it directly at a shop in ALOR STAR which is in kedah.

Well, celcom broadband is quite handy and stylish too, when you’re out in the field. You can browse the net as if you’re in the house…the problem is with the modem, it’s considered as expensive for average user. Secondly check your laptop battery. How many minutes/hours will it last. It’s no use if you can only use it for 30min. Then rush back home to recharge it. Unless you have a special charger and a very special permission from the TNB to recharge your laptop battery from the nearest HT cable.
(IN Bahasa).. Celcom Broadband tu memang selesa dan bergaya, terutama sekali semasa bekerja di luar. Kita boleh melayari internet sepertimana di rumah. Masaalahnya modem tu mahal sangat … tak mampu bagi kebanyakan pengguna. Keduanya sila semak tempoh penggunaan bateri laptop anda tu. Berapa min/jam. Tak ada ertinya kalau ianya hanya untuk 30min sahaja. Kemudian terpaksa bergegas kerumah untuk charge semula. Kalau ada special charger serta kebenaran khusus dari TNB untuk charge semula bateri laptop anda dari kabel HT yang berdekatan, tak apalah….

Anda perlukan satu medium sebagai modem — telefon bimbit 3G atau beli USB modem. USB modem jenama Huawei agak mahal (sekitar RM1,000). Jika guna telefon bimbit, pastikan laptop ada bluetooth. Anda juga perlu ada simcard 3G Celcom.

But the laptop battery is really a problem. I do see many people just find a plug somewhere and recharge their laptop as they work along. I don’t think people mind that( stall owner) but my opinion might be wrong.

It is normal to get high speed when we ping a server in Malaysia or even Singapore. The problem is when we ping a server in USA for example. Try pinging a server in USA (eg New York) to check your speed.

If there is no 3G coverage, you should receive GPRS coverage which is a maximum of 112kbps. However, the actual speed you get may vary and could be anywhere between 50 to 100kbps which is maximum twice as fast as dialup. Even if you are using USB modem, your speed depends on the coverage in your area. If there is 3G coverage, you’ll get faster speed or else it will only be gprs.
that means not much difference lah use data card or usb modem,since both depends on coverage.i thought usb modem will be more consistent

I ask promoter at stall who promoted the celcom broadband. she told me, if my hp not cover for 3g, she said I only supposed to have the data card cost about RM400. she didn’t mention about the usb modem. should we need the usb modem ?

from the comparison, i can conclude it is much more better to subsribe celcom broadband.
but i advice you to check the coverage for both provider at your area first before subsribing any package.

Fareez,once ko nak guna broadband monthly unlimited,celcom akan bagi ko satu lagi kad sim yang baru…kiranya ko akan ada dua kad sim…satu untuk prepaid ko dan satu lagi untuk broadband…dan maksudnya ko kena ada 2 telefon atau ko kena tukar sim bila nak bual call atau guna internet…
@deepblue - It’s x necessary to hav 2 sim, if u opt for data - celcom bb AND if you need ‘voice’, just add the minutes packages (which is postpaid).
The only limitation will be - data AND voice - couldn’t run simultaneously at the same time - IF your r using the standard 3g usb modem or datacard.
To overcome this problemo, find voice enabled datacard.
BTW, the initial cost for celcom bb unlimited 384 kbps will be :-
1) DATA ONLY PACKAGE - RM68 (first time) + 1st month bill (pro-rate of RM68). The subsequence months will be RM68 each.
I strongly advice in stead of buying the usb modem/ datcard frm celcom, get a cheaper solution frm gadget shops - my datacard (up to HSDPA speed - 7.2 Mbps)is only RM430.

Dah menggunakan celcom 68 hampir sebulan dengan menggunakan hp nokia 6120classic (ada hsdpa 3.5g) sebagai modem… buat masa ini semuanya memuaskan hati tiada sebarang masalah.. kecuali kalau pi tempat yg tiada coverage 3g. dah download lebih dari 1g masih tiada problem … tapi tunggu tengok le
