A few years ago, there were certain cameras or videocams that allow “see-through” photos be taken when attached with certain filters. There are a few experiments here that you may want to have a look at.
However, it looks like Photoshop could do the same “see-through” effects on photos taken by ordinary digital cameras. From the tutorial video below, any clothes that are light and thin enough is prone to such abuse.
The video is marked as “18+” only. So, that means it’s not safe for work and people below 18 or might get offended shouldn’t watch it.

I am here to say if you are willing you can get a really good see through clothes without buying the filter The trick is using the Filter>render>lighting effects
What you have to do is position the light at the opposite of the angle that the camera or sunlight is hitting the object but play with the light so that it is smooth dont blow out the brightness anywhere then you can play with the usual xray techniques
This directional light will help tremendously because it will fake a flashbulb try it out or send me an email with a photo you wanted xrayed I will show you and give you the steps I used for your particular photo then you can kinda get the feel of how to do it the hardest thing I have found to penetrate is polka dots but use your Noise dust and scratches to gently fade them out Until next time

The hardest thing in xray is smoothing a rough surface smooth photos work best hands down.

Yes the difference clouds work but people seem to have trouble with them the trick is to smooth the image out then darken the area then apply the difference clouds it is tricky but with practice, this method will work very good

Well it is still possible to get through but you may not get a great nipple image all colors can be adjusted and reversed having a color wheel will help in the hard to get through colors or invert the color with photoshop every pic is different and will need a different method the one mentioned on this page is great but only works sometimes with my version of ps I am trying my best to come up with a method which is relative for all pics lots of different ways because of color material type thickness etc all pics will not be able to get xrayed

A random chick I found
With the Taylor Swift one I used Filter> Noise> Dust and scratches then worked with other filters, this one took me a few saves to get it because sometimes once you use a filter in photoshop, it will not let you use it again. I had to save then start a new run at it
To be honest, I don’t know how I get some of the results. I spend a lot of time at it. I have a boring life I guess you could say. I don’t know how to do a vid tutorial, and a method for one pic may not work for the next. I do try to give tutorials on certain pics I get emailed to me.
I’m now using Topaz Adjust — this is the ultimate c-through software! Mike, feel free (or anyone for that matter) to send me some more pics. I am swearing by this software.

Again I only use an older Photoshop 5.0 and photosuite every pic is different so a different method is used on each use

1.) Selecting area 2.) Difference clouds 3.) Then levels, but still having to darken the area, if it’s bright before applying difference clouds this seems to work well on almost all photo

I have tried posting on a few sites, but everyone says “Man that fake” some photos do not turn out and may look fake. I wish I knew how to make a video with instruction and demo, but do not have the correct program. I think I have a program for just about everything else but that. I have come to the conclusion that the print tops are not impossible, but you will have to spend a little more time on them. There is no definate methods they all will be different. If you use difference clouds at the right time, and with the right darker color you will have a greater success rate

Well sometimes it comes out a shadow of the real thing, or where it should be using levels should sharpen it up.
I am still working on xrays, its just that so many came in while my laptop was wrecked. I am gonna try my best to get a tutorial up but one tutorial may not work for every color or material. I use different methods for different ones. I am going to pick black for the tutorial. Black is the hardest so if you can follow the tutorial you should be able to catch on to the others.

I have found that with lighter colored clothes, changing the channel mixer to Infrared seems to work with a few other tweaks.Also use levels, and the High Pass Filter. Mike, I hope you can work with this technique.

Smooth unwrinkled clothing will almost 100% of the time work no matter what color
1. Of course you need to make the area selection with the magnetic lasso
2. Smooth the fabric using either high pass, Gaussian blur, reduce noise
3. Getting the color darkened or lightened enough for when you apply the difference clouds you will get some detail (playing with the light and darkness and difference clouds should let you catch on quick.)
4.Then start working with sharpness and levels (still having to play with them to see what you want to) also try curves
5. If you have adjusted things right you should start seeing something
6. Once you find something try to sharpen and use levels again.
The steps above are what I go by you sometimes will not get the option to continue using some of the filters etc after one use, just save it as jpg then open back up and make the same selection voila you can continue.
Everyone take a shot at this tutorial, and see what you come up with. You can send the edited photo and I will take a look and see what else is needed.
I hope this helps you all.
I mainly use an old version of Photoshop I think its 5.0, GIMP it is free just google it, and photosuite I rarely use the other two. Please dont go buy a new and expensive photoshop just to try xraying.

Well guys I am back again today. I was looking through some boxes and ran across a pair of 3d glasses……….uh oh I immediately thought to myself, I wonder if this will help the others at tenthofmarch so I put them on and now I look like a goober. I was amazed at when you’re trying to get an xray, how the colors etc shift. It may just be me, but it actually seems to work. Give it a try and let me know what you all think. I am going to try making an actual red/green photo and see if it makes anything pop out.

2.right click then fill selection (for this image I used
background color > normal > 65%
3.Reduce noise 10,0,100
4.Action curves auto
5.Reduce noise 10,0,100
6.difference clouds
7.Auto contrast
This may not work on every photo, you may have to change the numbers and settings
This did work on a few photos in a row, so give it a shot.

Hey try using the blur options, smart blur works very good, but do not use but only maybe 0.6-1.1 radius makes a mess if too much is used, it gives you circles and such, which are hard to smooth out

The truth is that this xraying we do is not supposed to be possible, we are not actually seeing anything but enhanced shadows, so every pic will be something different even the xray machines at the airports only give us a reading of thermal energy. I have learned this crap because of many many many trial and error methods.

@david: topaz and difference clouds work best with tight(!) plain or striped shirts. the pic must not be too large (e.g. an original pic from a digicam is after my experience in over 80% of the cases for using the diff. clouds too large), so you may have to resize it. you may also have to try the diff.e clouds a few times to get a good result because the result varies a lot (undo, then redo). in the topaz package are the “spicify” and “nightlife” imo the best, but there are maybe other good ones i haven’t tried yet a lot. i hope, it helps.

Hey guys, I’m back in the biz. Got CS5…. here’s a new procedure that rocks!
1) Open image and switch to Mode = 16-bit.
2) Select shirt/top out into a new layer.
3) Use Adjustment—> Black and White, and tint roughly skin color. This allows for fine-tuning of colors and the nip will show through. For example, with a blue top you’d spend most time with Blue/Cyan settings
4) Fine tune with Shadows/Highlights
5) Go over WHOLE AREA with a small size/hardness drop shadow brush.
6) Send me a couple pics that are DOABLE (no prints, stripes or polkadots). Also, please no fat chicks, I won’t waste my time on those

i dont have the money for photoshop so i use gimp works just as well minus a few little tools but i think this technique will work in photoshop too when you select the shirt find something that says unsharp mask and ramp it up to about 1.50 then do the stndard process it can go through at least 2 layers of fabric also important to color if its white not a percect process but better than wlking awa angry any suggestions on how to refine will be nice

I have been working a lot lately on xraying.
I’m not quite ready yet to publish much, but I will also create an email for yall to send to.
There are a lot of ways of doing xray.
And a lot of those listed on here I haven’t even tried.
Though I have success using other methods.
I will be practicing using my techniques and installing others and we’ll see what results we get, hopefully good…

I’m going to take a chance and get back in the X-raying business for awhile. I had to drop off the site because 90% of the pics I was getting were Asian fat chicks. DO NOT SEND ME Asian fat chicks. Period. In fact, don’t send me any fat chicks of any kind, or I will disappear.
Back in the old days, xrayMike and I came up with a plan to keep this site rolling but we sort of fell off for awhile. I’m about to post a tutorial, step-by-step. I would also hope that — in the spirit of online friendship — you would do the same for me, using my tutorial… stand by.
1. Use Photoshop CS4 or higher. Forget about brightness/contrast. It’s not good enough. Difference clouds? Forget it. It’s contingent upon what your background colors are, and it’s pointless.
2. Using the quick selection tool, select the blouse/bikini/shirt. Copy it into a new layer. “Refine edge” (by right-clicking) so the edges aren’t so sharp
3. Go to Shadow/Highlight (under Image—Adjustments) on the new layer first. Move the highlight slider to the right so that it removes any glare. Fiddle with shadows to bring out hidden details. Don’t forget about your midtone contrast. You’ll probably need that to the right a bit to bring out the nipples. Most importantly….
4. IF THE RESULTS AREN’T SATISFACTORY, DO SHADOWS/HIGHLIGHTS AGAIN. Again, messing with hidden details via shadows, midtone contrast.
5. After the second pass, go to hue/saturation and try to get the tones about the same as the underlying skin.
6. Crank up — or down — the levels to try to get the brightness the same as the skin. Forget about brightness/contrast. It isn’t as powerful as levels of curves. If necessary, use curves.
7. With a VERY LIGHT SHADOW BURN BRUSH (I use like 3%), go UNDER the breasts. With a VERY LIGHT MIDTONES BURN BRUSH (5%) go over the nipples, which should — hopefully by now — be visible.
8. Flatten.
9. Use spot healing or healing brush to remove wrinkles in clothes. Use spot healing brush (very important) to remove edges of clothes against skin.
10. Adjust entire picture using autotones.

Been away for a long time. I will still and haven’t forgotten how to do the xrays, but still may not be able to get to everyone right away. Stevie I see you are still around. I also think I have found a way to record my many methods with hypercam.
Every photo will have a different method, it all depends on color and how wrinkled the fabric is. Difference clouds still seems to be the most usable and flexible method. Tip: choosing the skin color and fabric color to use with difference clouds works well.

Bras can be done, its not impossible.
I have also had not too bad results with Bikinis although it very much depends on how heavily printed they are.
Obviously the best pics are with any clothing that is tight to the body or thin, whites and blacks seem to both work equally as well for me.

If you guys knew what difference clouds really do, you’d notice it really makes no sense to use it the way you do. In this case, it’s just triggering your imagination. Difference clouds is nothing but a clouds layer set to difference mode.
The only coherent step you are doing is increasing the contrast of the image. If you can’t see anything with the increase of contrast, you can’t see anything, period.
What type of shirt is the easiest/hard to process? How to choose and x ray them. thx, sry for so many question, learning new things is my hobby

I made it back after a long vacation, I would love to see some of everyones xray work. I may do a few while I am visiting.:) Sorry to all the people who have sent pics to me to xray, I just don’t have the time I did when I was xraying all the time. Almost every photo is somewhat xrayable, you just have to smooth out the creases and depixelize, then get the lighting just right.
These x-ray things were a huge deal a few years ago. What happened? They kind of died out.
Well I don’t know if this thread is still active, but if so I have some pictures to send. I’ve been trying them out myself but have been getting poor results. Would love to get them done well and then have a goal to look towards after.

Hello friends.
I have been away for awhile and thought I’d give some thoughts. Firstly, many are asking for “tutorials.” Well, I guess I’ll have to finally admit — after a decade of trying — that there is no definitive *method* to make this work, universal to all photos. I have given up.
Lately I have been experimenting with the “Black and White” filter in CS5 and had some luck, especially with layering it (luminosity) over the background. But even then, you can’t account for certain “in-the-cracks” colors.
The conclusion for me is EVERY PHOTO IS DIFFERENT. For whites, you need a different routine than reds, etc. Forget different clouds, it doesn’t work (no disrespect, Mike) on colors, even if you zero them out. And levels? Screw that. It makes everything else around it dark, and if you erase out the perimeters your photo looks like a cartoon character.
